Bulgaria is the country that has
more animal species within its
territory than any other country
in Europe. The nature of the
country is very rich and
diversified. There are 3 major
national parks, 11 natural
parks, 89 natural reserves and
2234 natural sites. These
conditions allow Bulgaria to
support a biota that includes 94
species of mammals, more than
400 birds, 36 reptiles, 16
amphibians, an estimated 27,000
insects and other invertebrate
species, between 3,550 and 3,750
species of vascular plants. |

Having more than 400 bird species Bulgaria
is one of the best places for bird watching
in Europe. The various and wild habitats
give shelter and safe home for numerous
endangered species. A rare combination of
high mountain ranges, flat plains and a
picturesque sea coast, still housing
unspoiled and wild nature, can be observed
on such a small territory. |

Over 300
vertebrates reside in Rila, Pirin
and Central Balkan National Parks.
Some of the most significant
populations of large mammals in
Europe live in Bulgaria. These
include the Balkan chamois, brown
bear, wolf, and red deer.
Twenty-five species of smaller
mammals also live in Park territory.
Bulgaria has 30 bat species (the
second largest number in Europe);
60% of these are found within
Bulgaria’s three National Parks and
all are protected under Bulgarian
and international law. |

The major advantages of the organized
hunting tourism in Bulgaria are the
picturesque nature, unique hunting base and
excellent big game trophy. Despite its
relatively small area, the country has given
4 world records for red deer trophies.
Bulgarian is the world records for trophies
for wild and for wildcat. More than 16,000
red deer, 4,300 fallow deer, 71,500 roe
deer, 45,000 wild boars, 2,200 mouflons,
1,800 wild goats, 2,700 capercailzies, 830
bears, 115,800 pheasants, 313,000 partridges
and 36,000 rock partridges exist throughout
Bulgarian’s nature. The specialized
up-to-date equipment of the forestry,
comprising of more than 110 huts and hunting
houses, offers over 1100 beds and all
facilities and services. |

There are excellent opportunities
for fishing in Bulgaria along with
pike, carp and bream, to name but a
few in the mountain streams, and
comfortable accommodation to be had
with the local inhabitants. There
are 207 Black Sea and freshwater
fishes in the country’s water
basins.
