Area Info - Durankulak Village

Durankulak village is located on
the North-eastern end point in
Bulgaria, only 5 kilometers
south of the border with Romania
and 2 kilometers from the beach.
Its name comes from Turkish and
means "standing ear" because of
the similarity in the form of
Durankulak Lake.

Located a kilometer southeast of Durankulak
and separated from the sea with sandy hair
is the protected area of Durankulak Lake.
Known as Eagle lake or swamp, as it is
called local, it is not very deep and more
than two times longer than wide. Any lover
of nature must visit it to observe some of
rare and endangered flora and fauna.

In the waters of the lake are two
islands formed. Big island (now
peninsula), with an area of 20 ha,
is the first prehistoric open-air
museum in Bulgaria. On it is the
only European cave shrine of goddess
Kibela neolith settlement mound from
4600-4200 BC were found and traces
of the oldest agricultural-cattleman
population Dobroudja, winner of the
prehistoric culture Hamandzhiya.

Opportunities for cultural and
eco-tourism can be combine with a
vacation at sea in Durankulak. The
village offers family hotels,
private rooms and camping in
bungalows and a restaurant with a
lovely sea view.

The camping is located near Cape
Kartalburun and north and south of
it are the beaches of Durankulak.
The north beach has a length of 2.5
kilometers and reaches Cape
Sivriburun. Its local name is "Anna
Maria" after the name of the vessel
stranded in the 60-ies of XX century
in this place. There are still
visible debris from the ship. South
Beach is about 7 kilometers long and
extends to Cape Krapets as passes to
Durankulak Lake. |
